There is a lot of negative shit out there about comics. Fuck that! HOORAY FOR COMICS! HOORAY, I say! So I want to celebrate the really cool things that happened over the last year or so.
* Green Lantern: “The Sinestro Corps War”! HOORAY! Johns really brought Green Lantern into the now and is busy showing exactly how cool the character is, building on the mythology to make it grand and lush. There will be two books collecting the War, and one is out in Feb. So go buy it. Seriously worth your money.
* Booster Gold! HOORAY! I dunno, Booster is fun. He has a flying robot helper named Skeets! How can you not love that? And time travel, fun, and zany adventures! I tell you, it makes me wanna say... well... you know.
* Dan Slott! HOORAY! Yep, I am celebrating Slott. All of him. Every last Slott-ful inch of the man! Does he write the most mind-breaking thoughtful books ever? Nope. Are all of his books good reads that are fun to pick up and enjoy? You bet! And that's damned cool.
* The Legion of Super-Heroes! HOORAY! Well... I mean the book has been better. Waid did a great job, and all that noise but... whatever. The fact is they brought in Tenzil Kem (Matter-Eater Lad) for a minute, so HOORAY!
* No, you know what? HOORAY to the medium itself. From art books to serious works of literature to capes and funny animals. Archie even! Let's just all give a big thanks for the medium. Shit, comics are fun. They're good, a lot of them, and they tend to be made by folks who truly enjoy making them.
There's a simple joy in a good comic. Like a good book or movie or song, sure, but different. And I think that needs to be remembered. They aren't "movies on paper" or "TV shows on paper" or "pop singles on paper". They're COMICS. That's a great thing by itself. We don't have to shove them into someone else's toy box to appreciate them.
I'm sick of that. I want to enjoy comics for being comics. I love 'em. I mean shit I'll read Black Hole and Blankets and Hate and then pick up Green Lantern and Love and Rockets and Spider-Man and ... I enjoy the medium, the art of story-telling in comics.
And if you don't, I ask you to try them again. Think of a good book or movie you love, and there is a comic that tells the same sort of story but using the medium and techniques of comics instead, and guess what? They're just as good if not sometimes better than anything else out there.
Hell yeah!
HOORAY FOR COMICS! HOORAY!
Maybe even a BOOYAH tossed in there. For flavor.
